Reading Fluency

Below are a series of videos created from the Cabot Learning Federation’s first trust-wide reading fluency moderation session. In the introductory video, you will have the opportunity to consider reading fluency and the impact that it can have on reading comprehension. You will also have the opportunity to participate in an empathy task, experiencing what it is like for a pupil who struggles to read with fluency.

In the year group specific videos, you will listen to a child reading, followed by a discussion between colleagues regarding that child’s level of fluency. In all cases, you can see the text that the child is reading so that you are aware of whether they are reading accurately whilst attending to punctuation.

Literacy leads facilitated the conversations within each year group and thanks must go to all colleagues who participated.

The Fluency Scale

This is the multi-dimensional fluency scale that was referred to throughout the moderation process. As you can see, fluency is split into four distinct aspects. It is really useful to refer explicitly to these four aspects as this enables us to be specific about which aspects of fluency are a strength for each child and which aspects need additional support.
