Formative Assessment in The Classroom

The following webinar focuses on formative assessment and features Kate Jones, a Secondary history teacher currently based in Abu Dhabi. Kate has worked with Dylan William, Tom Sherrington and Siobahn Leahy and has recently authored ‘Five formative assessment strategies in action’ as part of the In Action education series of short texts to support pedagogy.

In this session, Kate focuses specifically on one of the five strategies in her book: eliciting knowledge from students. Kate references cold call, exit tickets, mini whiteboards and keyword spotlights. She gives very specific tips whilst sharing her experience in making these techniques as effective as possible.

Reflective Questions

  • How often do you practice the mentioned techniques – how do you use them to best effect?
  • What tweaks could you make to make your use of these techniques more effective?
  • How often do you observe colleagues practicing these techniques? How often do you invite feedback to improve your practice?
