Positive management practices

What can managers do to create a positive environment in which colleagues can work and grow?

By employing positive management practices with your team you should reduce the number of instances where you have to engage with formal procedures such as disciplinary or capability meetings.

Share what you expect of your team and support them in this through setting clear objectives in partnership with them.

Provide continuous feedback to your team and if objectives aren't going to be achieved discuss why this is the case and what could be done differently.

Ask meaningful questions to show a genuine interest in your team and individuals and listen to the answers that you receive.

Have regular individual conversations with team members and let your team know that you are always approachable.

Feedback is a 2-way process - Ask your team for feedback on your management practice.

Implementing these practices will help to ensure that formal procedures are your last resort.
