Social justice in the maths classroom

This workshop will use some ideas and activities from the Teaching Mathematics for Social Justice research project ( to prompt a discussion around issues of social justice in the the maths classroom. The project aimed to develop students’ mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills, their appreciation of the nature of mathematics, the reason for learning it, and how it can be used to better understand social justice issues including inequality, average income, Fair Trade and voting systems
