The following links to on-line training and resources have been selected support all colleagues on how we meet need, develop our understanding of inclusion and special educational needs and disabilities.​

20-minute Whole School SEND CPD Units

This series of online Continuing Professional Development (CPD) units is designed to support those who work with children and young people in schools and further education settings to deliver an inclusive experience for every learner.​

Funded by the Department for Education, and developed in partnership with Real Group, these free-to-access units build on learning from our Ambitious About Inclusion modules.​

​Each online unit takes 20 minutes to complete and is supported by a live online networking session, facilitated by a regional SEND leader at Whole School SEND.​

​As you advance through this series of units, you will earn badges reflecting your progress and certificates of completion can be obtained after the completion of tiers. ​

Whole School SEND Webinars

These are one-hour, live webinars and live online discussions delivered by Whole School SEND. They offer a wide range of topics, hosted by their regional lead teams and guest speakers from the world of education. The webinars are free, phase-specific and cover a range of different topics through their specialist spotlights.www.wholeschoolsend.org.uk/events

Condition-specific videos

A series of videos from Whole School SEND which were developed in 2019, for early career teachers, to provide helpful pointers, techniques and advice on inclusive teaching strategies. ​

​These are just guides to gain an understanding of specific conditions, But it is important to focus on the needs of children and young people rather than labels.

​The videos cover ADHD, Acquired Brain Injury, Autism, Down’s Syndrome, Dyscalculia, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Hearing Impairment, Physical Disability, Social, Emotional and Mental Health, Speech, Language and Communication Needs and Visual Impairment. ​

Council for Disabled Children Online Modules

Different online courses can be completed to support understanding of the SEND systems, including a Level 1 and 2 SEND Basic Awareness to Ordinarily Available Provision: Thresholds and Expectations of Schools and Settings. The modules within the units take between 20-45 minutes. ​

Autism Central

Autism Central has launched a podcast series focusing on sensory processing. Hosted by Holly Sprake-Hill, a neurodivergent occupational therapist, the series brings together autistic individuals, parents, carers, and professionals to discuss various aspects of autism. https://www.autismcentral.org.uk/news/sensory-processing-podcast

Tourettes* Action

Tourettes Action works in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and is the leading support and research charity for people with Tourette Syndrome and their families. We want people with TS to receive the practical support and social acceptance they need to help them live their lives to the full.

It is estimated that TS affects one school child in every hundred and more than 300,000 children and adults in the UK live with the condition.

Sensory processing

​This new e-learning on sensory processing from the National Children’s Bureau, now delivered through the RISE (Research and Improvement for SEND Excellence) Programme. 

It explores what it is and why it matters. It is intended for a wide variety of practitioners, especially those working directly with disabled children and young people and those with special educational needs.

The course covers:

  • sensory systems and sensory processing differences
  • practical application of the theory and where to go for support
  • sensory environments

It should take around 90 minutes to complete, including making notes in the accompanying learning log document that you can access through the course.
